The foundation of the Montgomery, AL Chapter of the GMWA started with the Mass Choir. Our history records our members represent churches in the Montgomery and throughout the River Region. Although there are various performance divisions, all members of Montgomery, AL Chapter rehearse and perform as one choir. All members are able to attend rehearsals, local workshops, special trainings, and perform with other chapter choirs at the yearly National Convention. Music selected for this choir ranges from traditional gospel, spirituals, anthems, hymns, to contemporary, modern gospel.
Young Adult Division
Montgomery, AL Chapter of the GMWA includes music study and performance of contemporary gospel music for the young to middle aged adults. This division typically performs the modern day contemporary gospel tunes along with contemporary arrangements of the traditional gospel hits. In this sector, we provide singers and worship leaders the tools to enhance the traditional worship experiences with modern and trending praise and worship music. Starting Sunday, January 08, 2023, the Young Adult Division will rehearse every 2nd & 4th Sundays at 5:00 p.m. All rehearsals are located at
First Baptist Church (347 N. Ripley Street, Montgomery, AL).
Since 2018, the Montgomery, AL Chapter of the GMWA added this amazing division. Members study and learn the musical form that was originated in the music genre of the Lutheran chorale, often time based on a hymn tune. Although this musical genre was originated and populated as early as the 1500s, many early settlers from Europe brought their hymns and sacred to song to North America. Later, African Americans were exposed to this sound and the their sacred music provided various styles including spirituals, shape-note music, and chorales.
The Youth is an integral part of our organization. "There are young folk that have talent but have no where to get instructions", said Rev. James Cleveland, the founder of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc. To keep this vision alive, the Montgomery, AL Chapter of the GMWA seeks to educate youth creatives through a youth-led and highly interactive development program designed to empower and engage youth, ages 10-18. The young people will explore their creativity in the performing arts. Additionally, this program will specifically partner with the Montgomery, AL Chapter Georgia Lee Stafford Black Scholarship Committee and the Montgomery Public Schools High Choral Programs to develop a singing ensemble and provide an opportunity for high school seniors to win the Georgia Lee Stafford Black scholarship upon entering college.
